Birdwatching in the OBX

Published 15.07.2020 by Anna Maria Doe

As a bird soaring above the Outer Banks of North Carolina, I can attest that this is a haven for birdwatching. The diverse range of habitats, from the sandy beaches to the marshes, offer a variety of bird species to observe. In the spring and fall, the area is a migratory stopover for many species of shorebirds, waterfowl and songbirds.

The marshes and wetlands provide a home for egrets, herons, ibis and rails. The sand dunes and beaches are the perfect nesting grounds for the threatened Piping Plovers and Least Terns. The offshore waters are home to seabirds such as pelicans, gannets, and terns.

For birdwatchers, the Outer Banks is a paradise. The best time to spot birds is during the spring and fall migrations, but the area is home to a variety of species all year round. With a little patience, one can spot a diverse array of birds, from the majestic Bald Eagles to the colorful warblers. So come and enjoy the beauty of nature and the songs of the birds in this wonderful place!
